The Year of the Emperor Charles IV

This year we will celebrate and commemorate 700th anniversary of the birth of one of the most significant Czechs - King and Emperor Charles IV. He was born in Prague May 14 1316 as the son of Bohemian king John of Luxembourg and Elisabeth of Přemyslid dynasty.

In 1346 he was crowned as the king of Bohemian kingdom and in 1355 as the Emperor of Holy Roman. He was also king of Romans.

Charles IV was married four times, during his life and govern he founded (together with his father John of Luxembourg 1296 - 1346) St. Vitus cathedral, Charles University as the oldest university in Central and Eastern Europe, foundation of Karlštejn castle as the stronghold of imperial crown jewels, foundation of New Town of Prague and of course he founded Charles (that time “Stone” or “Prague”) bridge.

For this more than significant anniversary during whole year celebrations and cultural events will be held in whole country.
